10 Years with Soulcrate

The two night, 10 year celebration fiasco with headliner SOULCRATE MUSIC took place in my city, Sioux Falls, SD, last Thursday and Friday at the Orpheum Theatre downtown. The first night was opened by fellow Sioux Falls band We All Have Hooks for Hands and the second night was graced by the outrageous presence of Prof and DJ Fundo. It was so amazing to be a part of Soulcrate's celebration--both nights were filled with some damn good music and performances!

I first heard about Soulcrate when I was a sophomore in high school (7 years ago... damn!), and it's truly incredible to see how they've transformed and improved since. I was hooked from the first songs I listened to, and my love has only grown from there. Soulcrate has put forth 10 years of hard work and dedication, and it's amazing to witness them finally achieving the recognition they deserve. Congratulations boys, your oldest and newest fans had a great time at the shows and I cannot wait to hear your next album!

About a Boy

In explanation to what you're about to read, this poem is based on a "dramatic monologue" assignment I did for a Creative Writing course. I chose to write in the voice of Kurt Cobain. It was an incredibly eye-opening experience learning so much about his youth, family life, struggles with himself and with the world he lived in. I wrote from his last moments of life, as he reflected on music, relationships, and the pain. Kurt was truly an incredible individual. It amazes me how misunderstood he was. In society, he was depicted as a moody, depressed, melodramatic, angry grunge artist who made mysterious and suggestive music. In reality, he was a sensitive artist with a troubled past who just loved too hard and too much to live past 27. A musical genius and a beautiful person... RIP Kurt Cobain. The world loves you and your music, even though that was never a concern of yours.

“About a Boy”
By Kara Larson

When you close your eyes—
Everything disappears.
Drop your lids on me.
Close your eyes to my existence.
Forget about my measly fucking life.
I’ve been searching for freedom from pain forever—
Today, I will reach Nirvana.

Punk was my release, the counter to this society of gluttony.
I found friends in my head, in the chords of my guitar,
My words, my music, my poetry—
They used to help—now I swim deep in a jar of honey.
I screamed into the mic, releasing years of fury,
But now, I am simply an unhealed scar.

The daggers in my stomach stab without remorse—I’m ready to be free.
But a pain far worse than this stems from love.
I can’t think about Frances or Cortney—
They will be better off without me.
Nothing in life will ever transcend love.
It’s the feeling that changes everything—softens humanity.

Society never understood the man I was.
They saw weirdness, an oddity, an impalpable question—
A man so fucked—but who are they to judge?
They aren’t in any less of a depression.

I could stare through their plastic façade.
Into their apathetic minds, laced with manure.
Their blood is the same as mine—they are not God.
It’s all too much now—my soul is raw, while my love remains pure.

They raped me of my happiness.
Offering my simple mind so lifeless an escape.
Drugs, sex, fame, money—“Nothing less.”
And now I’m stuck here alone—in a life so dead—too late to reshape.

Regret, security, love, and pain,
The feelings of a boy too broke to speak.
Nothing but cold coursing through my veins,
We are all fucked and weak.

The possessions, the hate, the ridicule—
What is this world coming to?
A playground for society’s fools…
My heart has taken a beating—black and blue.
Pulsating with fire—I’m the fuel.
I will never again see the world fresh with dew—
Send me into the next life—down into the drowning pool.

Looking through the scope of life,
I’m ready to give up this fight.
Take it all now—forever.
Forget about my legacy,
Pull the trigger.

In a feeble attempt to stay motivated during the raw pain and suffering of Finals Week, I have put together a little playlist to keep me motivated and chronicle the feelings one might experience through the week. From moments of complete focus achieved through an intense caffeine buzz, instances of downtrodden disappointment and outrage at your professors, and utter relief and joy to come at the end of it all, Finals Week definitely deserves a playlist all its own. Later Babes

A few cool kids from Hooks 4 Hands and Soulcrate Music put together a little group called Later Babes. The tracks below can be acquired FREE, so like, do it. Describing themselves as "Dance Tribal Beat Karaoke," and a "Dance cover band electro pop rip off group," their mixes deserve some dance floor action... Meow. Spread the word kids.

In Remembrance...

“Your eyes shined bright when you were a kid
Your sisters loved you and all that you did
Big brother, big brother don’t worry a bit
Your flame has not faded since the day it was lit

Your life was joy
Your mama’s only boy
And when the skies are blue
Big brother, they’re blue for you”

-The Black Keys "Unknown Brother"

I think about my brother most days, but today, my mind can think of little else. Today is his birthday and to celebrate his existence, here are some of his favorite songs that remind me of him every time I have a listen. He had excellent taste in music--hard rock of the glory decades (70s-90s). And although his time was cut short, his memory will live on forever. It's true what they say... Only the good die young. Enjoy the tunes dearies.

Jeff Buckley Cover Songs

Even if you don't know anything about me, you should know one thing. I love Jeff Buckley. His wide range of covers are what really got me to listen to more Bob Dylan, The Smiths, Led Zeppelin, and so many more. In theory, this works, but it's not exactly a conventional way to get turned on to an artist. Regardless, I think that Jeff covers true artists better than anyone, and here are some beautiful examples of such cover work. Eat up kittens.
